At Universal, I was lucky enough to meet my favourite superhero: Storm. Since I was a child, when I got up early to watch the X-Men cartoons whenever they were on, I have always loved her. Storm carries herself like a queen while being a total badass.
This was long before I had ever heard of “positive representation” or anything similar. Growing up in an all white family, it was nice to see a strong black woman kicking ass on television. Storm coped with being a mutant and an ethnic minority, and she did it with real flair. She showed me that I could embrace what made me different, too. While learning to control the weather wasn’t a realistic goal, I appreciated having her to look up to as a child.
For my 21st I went to Florida and, as an adult, met my hero. She was very kind, and honoured to hear how much meeting her had meant to me. Seeing Storm was everything that I could have hoped for.
